Where a whole-house surge protector sits and what it does
A whole-house protector goes in at the service equipment, usually at or beside the main panel, so it limits a spike for every circuit rather than one outlet at a time. A plug-in strip protects only what is plugged into it.
Because the device lands on the service, the work is electrical wiring under MCL 339.5701, and only a licensed individual may install it unless the owner-occupant exemption applies. Michigan's code rule R 408.30801 adopts the 2023 NEC, second printing, with state amendments, and the installer works to that.
Surge protection costs: what we can and cannot show
Our estimate for this job in Michigan is $275 to $1,050 per install. It is a model, not a quote, built from one national published cost range, widened by 15 percent each side, and adjusted by Michigan's wage ratio to the US (1.03), with a typical permit fee added for the work.
The estimate above is modeled from a national published range, not collected from Michigan companies. DTE's plan prices above are the utility's own, not an electrician's. Permit fees below are the city's or state's charge; ask the office how it bills a surge device.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $275 to $1,050 per install | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Michigan electrician wage ratio (1.03) plus a typical permit fee ($97). |
| Electrician wage, Michigan mean | $35.50 an hour | What electricians are paid (BLS, May 2025), not what you are charged. |
| Grand Rapids-Kentwood mean | $31.86 an hour | Wage paid, not a price. |
| State permit, application and service line | $75 application, service through 200 A $10 | Where the state inspects, schedule of April 1, 2024. |
| Grand Rapids permit | $52 application, service up to 200 A $17 | Effective July 1, 2026. |
| Troy permit | $75 minimum, service up to 200 A $40 | Fiscal year 2026-27. |
How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes one published national range for this job (cost guides from third-party sites that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies them by Michigan's electrician wage ratio to the US (1.03, BLS May 2025) and adds a typical permit fee ($97). The wage and permit rows below are what electricians are paid and what the enforcing agency charges, and neither is a price. We have not collected quotes, and too few Michigan electrical companies publish a price we could count to show a range. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.
What a code summary says about dwellings
ICC NTA's description of the 2023 Michigan rules says surge protection is required for dwelling unit services and feeders under NEC sections 215.18, 225.42 and 230.67. That is a secondhand summary, and it reads as a requirement from the unamended NEC rather than a Michigan amendment, so treat it as a pointer. Ask your electrician or the inspector to cite the section that applies to your job.
A Part 8 rule update is in rulemaking at LARA, and we do not say which NEC edition it would adopt.
DTE's paid plans, as printed on Oct 19, 2026
DTE offers two monthly plans. Whole Home Surge Protection costs $14.99 a month plus a one-time $99.99 device install fee. Surge Protection Plus adds a GenerLink socket-mounted transfer switch and a generator connection port for $22.99 a month, with an install fee of $99.99 or $249.99 depending on the device. A free-installation promotion in April 2026 expired May 1, 2026.
These are paid plans, not rebates, and prices can change. We found no Michigan source on how long these devices last or if one pays for itself, and no Consumers Energy surge program on its pages, so for a Consumers customer the route is an electrician.
After a lightning strike or a power surge
- Scorch marks, smoke, a burning smell or buzzing at the panel or meter: leave the house and call 911.
- Water has reached the panel after a storm.
- Some electronics died in a storm but the panel looks normal and nothing smells.
- A plug-in surge strip tripped and the rest of the house is fine.
Before you call about surge damage
- List which appliances or electronics stopped working and when.
- Check your bill to see which of DTE or Consumers Energy serves you.
- Photograph the closed panel and any damaged device.
- Leave the panel cover and meter seals alone; DTE says breaking a meter seal needs its permission.
License and permit for work at the panel
MCL 339.5731 lets only a licensed individual install electrical wiring, and MCL 339.5737(3)(g) excepts a homeowner working personally in a single family home they own and occupy. LARA's permit page says altering or adding to conductors or equipment needs a permit, and R 408.30827 says the enforcing agency approves service equipment that is installed, altered or repaired before the load side of the meter is energized.
No LARA page says a surge protector needs a permit in so many words, so put the question to your city's electrical office, and check any electrician's license on the LARA lookup.
Ask for the license number and check it with your state's licensing board before any work starts.

A tool for this job
Do I need a panel upgrade?
Read the label on the panel, note the main breaker size, say what you have noticed and what you plan to add. You get a verdict, the Michigan permit and utility notes that go with it, and what to ask the electrician. It runs in your browser and asks for nothing. It cannot see inside your panel, and every rule it applies has a source behind it.
Open the toolQuestions people ask
Do you need an electrician to install a whole house surge protector in Michigan?
A licensed individual must install it, unless you are the owner-occupant of a single family home. The device is wired at the service, so permit and inspection questions apply either way.
Does DTE offer surge protection?
Yes, as paid monthly plans, not rebates. As printed on Oct 19, 2026, Whole Home Surge Protection is $14.99 a month plus a $99.99 install fee, and prices can change.
Is a whole house surge protector required in Michigan?
ICC NTA's summary says the 2023 rules call for it on dwelling services, but that is a secondhand summary and the requirement comes from the unamended NEC. Ask your electrician or inspector to cite the section for your house.
How much does a whole house surge protector cost in Michigan?
Our estimate for an electrician's install is $275 to $1,050 per install, with a typical permit fee of $97 included, modeled from a national published range. DTE's own plan is $14.99 a month plus $99.99 to install, as printed Oct 19, 2026.
Does a surge protector need a permit in Michigan?
It reads as a panel job that needs one, but no LARA page says so directly. Check with your city's electrical office before work starts.
