Flint particulars
Flint's permits page offers an application for a city Electrical Contractor's License on top of the state license. The page does not say who must hold it, so ask the city before assuming your electrician needs one. Permits come from Building and Safety Inspections at 1101 S. Saginaw St., Room S106, phone 810-766-7284, using downloadable PDF forms, since LARA's Statewide Jurisdiction List shows electrical enforcement as local. The city's rental inspection list shows what inspectors check.
Missing outlets or light switches, and missing junction box covers, rank eighth among the top ten failures, and no working electricity ranks tenth. The list dates from a 2022 upload, so treat it as a guide. Consumers Energy is the only electric territory the state's map shows touching Flint; confirm by address. Consumers lists $500 off a Level 2 home charger installation, or up to $1,000 for income-qualified customers, and says its terms may change without notice (as of Oct 19, 2026).
The terms call for an electrician to do any needed upgrade work. See the EV charger page for the job itself. Flint's housing is 93.2 percent pre-1980 with a median value of $47,600, so weigh any rewiring quote against that value and get a second opinion. BLS lists Flint electricians at a mean $36.20 and a median $37.63 an hour, which is pay, not price. Two nearby cities: Burton at 4.1 miles and Fenton at 15.5.
Emergency electrician in Flint: what to know
Downed lines and anything touching them call for 25 feet of distance, Consumers says. The mast, service head and wires on the house belong to the customer, and Consumers crews reconnect only once a licensed electrician has checked or repaired them. Consumers is the only electric territory the state's map shows for Flint.
Michigan's R 408.30823 allows a utility to reconnect before inspection after emergency repairs, with the electrical contractor's permit due the next business day. Flint's Building & Safety Inspections, 810-766-7284, handles electrical permits, and the rule does not cover upgrades. With 93.2 percent of Flint's housing built before 1980, an inspection after any storm repair is a fair thing to ask for. The emergency figure comes from our model and has no Flint company's posted rate behind it.
Permits for emergency electrician in Flint
LARA's electrical permit page says no one may add to or alter electrical conductors or equipment without a permit.
Many cities run their own building department, so start by asking the City of Flint building department who issues electrical permits.
Electrical problems that cannot wait
- Sparks, smoke, flames or a burning smell: leave and call 911.
- Water has reached the panel, an outlet or the meter.
- A service line is down or the mast is pulled off the house: stay 25 feet back and call 911.
- An outlet or switch plate is hot to the touch.
- One dead outlet with the breaker and the GFCI already checked.
- A light that flickers now and then and does not smell or feel warm.
What to check before you call
Try this first: before you pay a call-out, check whether a neighbor's power is out too, which points to the utility and not your wiring.
- Look at your utility's outage map: if the neighbors are dark too, the problem is outside the house.
- If only some circuits are dead, check the breakers and reset a tripped one a single time. If it trips again, leave it off.
- If an outlet has a GFCI reset button, press it once.
- Photograph the panel with the cover on, and note which rooms and circuits are dead.
- Do not open the panel or touch wiring.
What emergency electrician costs
The estimate below is the Michigan-wide one, adjusted for Michigan wages and not for Flint in particular. The same table is on the emergency electrician page. How we estimate costs. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $130 to $240 per hour of labor, before any call-out fee | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Michigan electrician wage ratio (1.03). |
| Electrician wage, Michigan mean | $35.50 an hour | What Michigan electricians are paid (BLS, May 2025), not what you are charged. |
| Electrician wage, U.S. median | $30.38 an hour | What electricians are paid across the United States, not what you are charged. The Michigan median is $36.67. |
| State permit application, where the state inspects | $75 | The state's non-refundable application fee. It is the permit charge, not the electrician's price, and cities with their own inspectors set their own. |
How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes one published national range for this job (cost guides from third-party sites that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies them by Michigan's electrician wage ratio to the US (1.03, BLS May 2025). The wage and permit rows below are what electricians are paid and what the enforcing agency charges, and neither is a price. We have not collected quotes, and too few Michigan electrical companies publish a price we could count to show a range. Full method.
Questions about emergency electrician
What is considered an electrical emergency?
Smoke, sparks, flames, a burning smell, or water reaching the panel or outlets. Leave the building and call 911 for any of those.
When should I call an emergency electrician?
Call when a fault has left you without power you need, or when something is warm, buzzing or tripping repeatedly and the house is otherwise safe.
How much does it cost to call out an electrician in Michigan?
Our estimate is $130 to $240 an hour for labor, before any call-out fee. It is modeled from a national published range and adjusted for what Michigan electricians are paid (a mean of $35.50 an hour, which is a wage and not a bill), so use it to judge a written quote and not as one. Ask what the call-out fee covers and if the rate changes after hours.
